Chapter 03 03 When he spends

Chapter 03

When a fan spends: aroused, in love, or both

A subscriber opens his wallet in two states, aroused or in love. He follows a dozen creators at once, and none of them can touch him. The job is to be the one of the dozen he thinks of when he wakes up.

There is a simple question few beginners ask: at what moment, exactly, does a subscriber decide to pay? Not in the abstract, not “when the content is good”. At what point in his evening, in what state. The answer from experienced chatters fits in two words. He pays when he is aroused, or when he is in love. Everything else, the questions, the notes, the script, the time a message is sent, serves to produce one of those two states, and if possible both at once.

1

Two states, one buying moment

Arousal pays tonight. Attachment pays for months. The two together pay the most.

Arousal is quick to produce and short-lived. It climbs in a few messages, it decides a purchase, and it collapses after the orgasm, which poses a problem covered in the chapter on after the script. An aroused fan is also more vulnerable in his decisions, which explains why the first login, often made in that state, converts more easily than the second.

Attachment is slow to build and durable. An attached fan comes back without being aroused, just to talk, and he comes back the next day. He is the one who makes an account's value over time, what the previous chapter calls LTV. The first state wins you the evening. The second wins you the quarter.

The combination is the goal. An attached fan who gets aroused talking to you is the most valuable conversation on an account: he buys tonight, he will come back tomorrow, and he does not need to be convinced, because simply thinking of you is enough to put him in the state where he buys.

Arousal opens the wallet tonight. Attachment opens it again next month.

2

Ten conversations open at the same time

You are one tab among ten. He compares without saying so.

To understand a fan, you have to accept a slightly humbling reality: he often follows a dozen creators at once, and he chats with several of them at the same time, sometimes in the same evening. You are not the only window open on his screen. He compares, without ever saying so, the speed of the replies, the warmth, the attention he is given.

Standing out does not mean being more explicit. All ten are. Standing out means being the one who remembers what he said yesterday, who asked how his interview went, who reacts to what he sends instead of moving straight on to a media. Getting him to wake up the next day wanting to write to you rather than to another is a hard goal, and it is not won with content. It is won with attention.

3

Without physical contact, what is left

Men are not very loyal, and your only tools are words, images and time.

The trade puts it bluntly: men are not very loyal, and the only weapons you have involve no physical contact. A real relationship holds through presence. Here, it holds through the feeling of being known. That is why the goal set for the chatter is to know everything about the fan, down to the details he tells nobody else. You have to become so curious about him that he ends up falling in love with that curiosity.

That is not a figure of speech. Most fans have nobody in their real life who asks them those questions with that consistency. A conversation that does so fills a void, and a filled void gets paid for. The chapter on retaining big spenders shows that this is precisely what the heaviest buyers come looking for.

4

Becoming his girlfriend

You fit into his life. He talks to you in the morning, in the evening, and in between.

Becoming what he dreams of having in the real world, his girlfriend, is the frame of the whole job. Concretely, it means fitting into his life: a message in the morning, a word before he sleeps, a question about his weekend game or the exam he was taking on Tuesday. A girlfriend is not customer service. She has a day, moods, tastes, she sometimes says no, and that is what makes her believable.

Once he feels comfortable, he opens up. He tells you what he tells nobody else, he commits emotionally, and the sale changes in nature. It becomes easy, because he is aroused just thinking of you, before the first media is even sent. A fan in that state does not ask the price, he asks for what comes next.

5

Combining the two, in the right order

Attachment is built in days. Arousal is produced in minutes. You do not do them at the same moment.

If a fan spends when he is in love and aroused, the conclusion is to combine the two so that his wallet opens for you. But the two are not produced at the same pace or at the same moment. Attachment is built over days, outside sessions, in conversations where nothing is for sale. Arousal is produced in minutes, during a session, with the script.

The two symmetrical mistakes are therefore easy to name. Chasing arousal in a stranger is selling on day one, and the previous chapter showed what that costs. Chasing attachment in the middle of a session, breaking the rhythm to ask about his week, is wrecking the state you just created. The right order is the subject of the next chapter: first the basics, then the intimate layer, then letting the fan open the door to sex himself.
